When bombs don’t let you stop learning.

It’s hard to believe that it’s already that time of year again- back to school. But for Ukrainian children, this school year is starting off much differently than in years past due to the ongoing war.

I remember going to school in the Soviet Union and how we would start the first day of school by ringing a bell.

It’s hard to imagine going to school and hearing sirens. It’s even harder to imagine going to school in a place where bombs have destroyed the buildings.

And it’s devastating to think about going to school and finding out that some of your classmates have been wounded or killed. But this is reality for many children in Ukraine today. It’s hard enough being a student, but can you imagine having to go to school in a subway?

That’s the reality for some students in Ukraine, where only 40% of schools are open. Many school buildings have been destroyed, so the children have to make do with what they have. In Kharkiv city, students began their school year by holding classes in the subway.

This is a challenging time for all of us. But we remain hopeful. I know that God is on the side of the victims. God is our comforter. We trust the Lord to help us through this time. We see that the light is coming. We see that the sun is appearing through the clouds.

Your prayerful support during this difficult time in the war in Ukraine has meant so much to us.

We are truly grateful for your generosity and prayers. We know that times are tough all over the world, but your solidarity has been a source of strength for us. Thank you for your caring hearts.

Gratefully,

Pastor Vitali Yuchkiovski
