Give Thanks and Remember

Throughout history, many cultures have set aside a time for expressing their thankfulness.  In the US, Thanksgiving Day originated with the pilgrims.  In the midst of extreme hardship, loss of loved ones, and meager supplies, they still believed they were blessed.  They chose to celebrate God’s blessings by sharing a meal with Native Americans who had helped them survive.

A moment in Plymouth, nearly 400 years ago, when two distinct cultures, on the brink of profound and irrevocable change, shared that autumn feast.  Today, America and Russia are two distinct cultures but we share in the need to thank God on this upcoming holiday as well as every day.  Thanksgiving is a profoundly Christian holiday.  It focuses us on God as the true source of all our blessings.  As the hymn writer said, “All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small, all things wise and wonderful, the Lord God made them all.”

As we approach this holiday may we focus on family, count our blessings and name them one by one.  I know this may sound trite.  But, have you thought that you take approximately 23,000 breaths every day, but when was the last time you thanked God for one of them?  I pray that we may begin to intentionally be aware of God’s gifts all around us and respond with gratitude.  From beginning to end, all of life is a continuous gift-given by God.  “In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:18.  Try praising the Lord for one minute without stopping.  Do it every day for a week and see how it strengthens your heart and brings you closer to Him.

I believe serving others is also a way of thanking God.  Be thankful for God’s many blessings, but be sure to remember those who have less.  Our thanksgiving to God should always be accompanied by th

inking of those in need.  But, there’s more to it.  We’re to put actions behind our gratitude.  “Do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.” – Hebrews 13:16

Our God is abundantly good.  Let’s overflow with praise for His many blessings.  Wishing you the gift of faith and blessings of hope this Thanksgiving Day!

Your Brother in the Lord,

Pastor Vitali Yuchkovski
